Some people have been suggesting that religion is killing the Republican party, and I have to disagree. It's not religion, but the people behind the religious beliefs, and I say this after watching many Republicans for years, try to legislate their religious doctrine into laws governing all people.
Follow up:
For example, Republican Mike Huckabee (shown above) wants to amend the United State Constitution to reflect the word of God. Not only is this in direct conflict with Separation of Church and State, but it's also an attempt to force everyone to live by Mike Huckabee's version of what God wants or doesn't want.
If fact, Mr. Huckabee suggested that the reason for the decline in the economy was due to greed, and if everyone were Christians under his banner, our economy would be fine now. Hmmm .. I can think of many "Christians" of every faith, from politics to business, sitting in prison, done time or disgraced forever due to greed. I'm not suggesting these fallen Christians are all Republicans, but I know many are, so how would being a Baptist for example have saved the economy? And, who has been "in charge" of the country for the last 8 years? Democrats? Or, has the government been run by agnostics for the last eight years?
Historically, this is what most Republicans have done for years though, and it's worked in the past. Make the United States one nation under God .. But who's version of God? The Methodist, Catholics, Baptists, or Jim Jones's version? And, which bible should we base the Constitution on? Also, why should everyone live by strict religious laws (as defined by most Republicans) that have no room for shades of grey?
How about this for an idea for the Republican party members. Everyone gets to decide what they want to believe, and how they worship. Republicans and other Religious special interest groups don't get to buy or bully their religion based laws into the lives of everyone. Make your platform about helping all people (whether they believe your doctrine or not), and not splitting the Country into us (the rich religious folks) and them (the poor 'heathens').
Better yet, take religion completely out of politics.
Could work ....
